Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama series in which 456 financially desperate individuals are invited to participate in a mysterious and deadly competition. The games are based on traditional Korean children’s games — but with a lethal twist. The winner receives a huge cash prize of ₩45.6 billion (about $38 million USD), but losing means death.
🧩 Story Summary (Spoilers ahead)
Episode 1: Red Light, Green Light
We meet Seong Gi-hun, a divorced chauffeur with a gambling problem. Deep in debt, he receives a strange offer to play a game for a chance to win money. He and 455 others are taken to a secret location where the first game — Red Light, Green Light — turns deadly. Over half the players are brutally eliminated when they fail to follow the rules.
Episode 2: Hell
The survivors vote to end the game, but many, including Gi-hun, choose to return due to their miserable lives. This episode gives a deeper look into the contestants’ backgrounds and personal struggles.
Episode 3: The Man with the Umbrella
Back in the game, contestants play Sugar Honeycombs (Dalgona Candy challenge). Gi-hun narrowly survives. Tensions rise as alliances start forming. We meet key characters:
-
Cho Sang-woo, Gi-hun’s childhood friend, intelligent but corrupt.
-
Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector.
-
Abdul Ali, a kind migrant worker.
-
Jang Deok-su, a violent gangster.
Episode 4: Stick to the Team
Players team up for a brutal game of Tug-of-War. With smart tactics, Gi-hun’s team beats a stronger opposing team and survives.
Episode 5: A Fair World
The aftermath of Tug-of-War leaves players shaken. Nighttime turns deadly as players attack each other in fear of eliminations. Meanwhile, a police officer named Hwang Jun-ho infiltrates the game facility in search of his missing brother.
Episode 6: Gganbu
A devastating emotional episode. Contestants are told to pair up, only to discover they must play Marbles against their partner — and only one can survive. Ali is betrayed by Sang-woo. Sae-byeok wins. Gi-hun manipulates an old man, Oh Il-nam, to survive.
Episode 7: VIPs
Masked VIPs (rich elites) watch the next game, Glass Stepping Stones, where players jump across panels — one strong, one fragile. Many fall to their deaths. Sae-byeok is injured, and only Gi-hun, Sang-woo, and Sae-byeok survive.
Episode 8: Front Man
With only three players left, tension escalates. During dinner, Sang-woo kills Sae-byeok in cold blood. Gi-hun is horrified but prepares for the final showdown.
Episode 9: One Lucky Day
The final game is the deadly Squid Game. Gi-hun defeats Sang-woo but refuses to kill him, offering to quit the game together. Sang-woo, overwhelmed by guilt, takes his own life. Gi-hun wins the prize.
Later, Gi-hun finds out the game’s mastermind was Oh Il-nam, the old man he befriended — who joined the game out of boredom and to feel alive. Il-nam dies shortly after revealing the truth.
In the final moments, Gi-hun sees another game starting and vows to stop it, setting up a potential second season.
